The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana is accusing big wigs in politics and businessmen of being behind the smuggling of huge quantities of fuel onto the Ghanaian market.

According to the Chamber these politicians and businessmen have formed a syndicate and do not only by pass the system but also evade taxes.

Last year alone Ghana is said to have lost a whopping 850 million cedis to the activities of these fuel smugglers.

In a statement to commend the National Petroleum Authority on the arrest of illegal oil vessels, the Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana Duncan Amoah called for the immediate prosecution of those arrested.

Mr Amoah also cited some illegal structures along the Tema-Kpone- Ashaiman stretch who engage in the adulteration of smuggled fuel which they release onto the market. He called for the demolishing of those structures.
